  • Sunday, February 20, 2022

The Covenant women's tennis team went up against two strong SAA opponents over the weekend and went 0-2. The Scots fell to Birmingham Southern, 9-0, on Friday night at McCallie School before falling to Oglethorpe, 6-3, on Saturday in Atlanta.

Covenant drops to 3-4 on the year.

Despite some tough battles, Covenant was unable to notch a point in a 9-0 loss to Birmingham Southern on Friday night. Madelyn Savage and Gillian Bosko played right with the top duo of Ansley Turley and Phoebe Shapard before falling, 8-4, at the top flight in doubles.

In singles play, Lauren Carr was narrowly defeated by Shapard 7-6, 6-2. The visiting Panthers went on to complete the sweep in the other five flights.

On Saturday in Atlanta, Covenant grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles play but Oglethorpe rallied back for the win.

Nicole Restrepo and Carr were 8-5 winners over the Petrels' Sydney Dattilo and Lily Allyene at the No. 2 spot. Kacey Melton and Anna Logan gave the Scots a 2-1 lead with their 8-2 victory over Alexis Salgueiro and Katie Hunter at No. 3.

Savage held down the top flight in singles play with her 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Izzy Forster.

Three of the last five flights went to three sets, but Oglethorpe came out on top in each spot to secure the victory. Restrepo dropped a tight match at No. 2 in three sets to Dattilo, while the same fate occurred to Carr at No. 3 and Alexis Baker at the No. 5 spot.

Covenant returns to action on March 5 beginning a stretch of matches in Orlando, Fla.

The men's tennis team also lost both of their matches. On Friday night, the Scots fell to Birmingham Southern, 5-4, at the Strang-Voges Tennis Center at McCallie School. On Saturday, the Scots were defeated by Oglethorpe, 6-3, in Atlanta.

The losses drop the Scots to 1-3 on the young season.

In Friday's loss, the Scots battled with the region foe Birmingham Southern before falling, 5-4.

Covenant fell behind, 2-1, after doubles play. Ben Luke and Camden Lashley combined for the Scots' point at No. 3 doubles with their 8-7(6) win over the Panthers' Tyler Guerra and Tom Smith.

In singles play, Covenant picked up wins from Solomon Crouch and Chris Morton. Crouch took down Elijah Ingleson at the No. 4 spot in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(5), while Morton was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Smith at No. 6.

The turning point of the match came at the No. 2 flight as Covenant's Austin Dreslinski and Birmingham Southern's Wilbur Dotson needed extra points in the third-set tiebreak to determine the winner. Dotson outlasted Dreslinski in those three sets 4-6, 7-6(5), 1-0(10) to give the Panthers a 4-2 lead in the match.

On Saturday, it was another tight battle with an SAA foe. With a short turnaround and a trip to Atlanta, the Scots fell to Oglethorpe, 6-3.

Ethan Gibson and Gill Dunn took a point in doubles play with their 8-5 win over Vincent Claussen and Kirkman Kier at the No. 2 position. The host Petrels took a 2-1 lead into singles play.

Dunn also took a win in singles as he bested Cameron Burkes 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 5 spot in the lineup. Dreslinski had the other point for the Scots with his 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win over Claussen at No. 2.

Covenant travels to Texas next week for three matches. The Scots take on Texas Lutheran on Feb. 24 in Belton, Texas at 2 p.m. EST (1 p.m. CST).
