The Covenant baseball team scored four runs in the seventh inning, but they were ultimately not enough as Emory & Henry held on for the 7-6 victory.
The win improves the Wasps to 3-5, while the Scots fall to 3-4.
A double from Joseph Ridenour and an RBI sacrifice fly from Kenny Mills helped Covenant jump out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Though, Emory & Henry would answer with two runs off of two hits in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead.
After holding Covenant scoreless in the bottom of the third, the Wasps used five hits in the top of the fourth to score five runs.
Four singles and a two-RBI double from Sean Davis-Cherry soon made it 7-1 in favor of Emory & Henry.
The score would stay that way until the bottom of the fifth when the Scots cut the deficit to five thanks to a double from McKaleb Harlemon and an RBI single from Andrew Brock (7-2).
After a scoreless sixth inning for both teams, Covenant began to chip away at the Wasps' lead in the bottom of the seventh, as they would score four runs off of four hits.
With two outs recorded, Ken Burke notched a triple down the right field line. Ridenour then hit an RBI single, bringing in Burke and making it 7-3. Ridenour was then brought around to score thanks to a wild pitch and an Emory & Henry error, cutting the lead to three (7-4).
Harlemon then doubled, bringing in two more Covenant runs and bringing them within one of the visiting Wasps (7-6).
The Scots had runners in scoring position in the top of both the eighth and ninth innings. But, they ultimately could not bring them in to score, resulting in the close 7-6 loss.
Ridenour was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Josh Harvey, Brock, and Harlemon all went 2-for-4, with Harlemon recording two RBIs.
Aaron Northcutt (0-1) got the start on the mound for the Scots, going six innings with five earned runs, one walk, and three strikeouts. Judah O'Neal and Conor Austin together pitched three innings of relief, recording five strikeouts, zero earned runs, and zero walks.
For the Wasps, Davis-Cherry was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Pitcher Luke Kennedy (1-2) picked up the win, pitching six innings and recording two earned runs, three walks, and two strikeouts. Zack McRae earned his first save of the season, pitching three innings of relief and striking out three.
