Marian McWhorter transitioned into her heavenly home on Friday, March 18, 2022. 

She was born in Brooklyn, NY at Kings County Hospital. She was raised by her grandmother and grandfather, Laura and Cary Little in Atlanta, Georgia. She moved to Chattanooga as a teen to live with her mother and stepfather, Josie and George Walker. She married John H. McWhorter, Jr. She joined Cosmopolitan Church and eventually became a member of Allen Temple A.M.E. Church, where she served on the Board of Trustees, Usher Board and Missionary Society. She retired from the former Provident Insurance Company. 

She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents; her husband, John H. McWhorter; Jr.; her two daughters, Bertha Church and Sandra Brinson; her two sons, David and John H. McWhorter, III.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol (Robert) Thomas, Sr. of Chattanooga, son-in-Law, Jimmy Church, of Nashville; grandchildren, Jimi Church, of Nashville; Monica (Emeri) Gordon, Robert (Shaniqua)Thomas, II, Jason (Kenya)Thomas, Sr., all of Chattanooga; Lisa M. Hinton, of Hamilton, NJ, John H. McWhorter, III, of Niceville, Fla; Willie Brinson, Derrick (Regina)Brinson, and Jason (Angela) Brinson, Sr., all of Jacksonville, Fla; great-grandchildren, Delane, Chaison and Alanna Gordon; Jason (JJ), Sanaa, Julissa, Juliana Thomas, Alysiah and John McWhorter, IV, Derrick Jr., Madyson and Jason Brinson, II; other great-grandchildren; goddaughter, Patricia Sanderfer, other relatives and friends; special recognition to Mrs. Pat Dickens with T’s Affordable Sitting Services for the loving care she provided to our mother and grandmother during her illness.

Public viewing will be held 4–6 p.m. on Friday, March 25, at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Avenue, Chattanooga, TN 37404.

A funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, at Allen Temple A.M. E. Church, 817 Dodson Ave., Chattanooga, Tn. 37404. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
