Basketball season is creeping closer. While it’s still a more than two months away, the Southern Conference slate is now available for public consumption.
Head coach Shawn Poppie will lead the Mocs in the hunt for a 23rd regular season title as the Southern Conference enters its 40th season of championships in women’s basketball.
The SoCon season begins arrival of the new calendar year.
The Mocs will start on the road at East Tennessee State, playing the opener on January 5 in Brooks Gym on the ETSU campus. The Bucs will be under the direction of their third head coach in three seasons.
The next week sees Chattanooga home against Samford who shared the 2020 title with Chattanooga and UNCG before winning it outright in 2021. The Bulldogs will come to the Scenic City on January 12 and Mercer, the reigning league champion, will follow on January 14.
The following week, the Mocs will head to the Palmetto State for matchups against Wofford on January 19 at the Richardson Indoor Stadium. On January 21, UTC will take on Furman at Timmons Arena.
A three-game home stand will follow with UTC hosting UNC Greensboro on January 26 followed by Western Carolina on January 28 to close out the first half of play. A matchup against ETSU the following week tips off play the final seven games of SoCon play. That game will take place February 4 at the Roundhouse.
A trip down I-75 on February 9 will take the Mocs to Mercer for the second meeting this season, then over to Alabama for a matchup against Samford in Birmingham on February 11.
The Mocs close out the home portion of the slate against Furman on February 16 and a double-header with the men’s team two days later against Wofford. The final week will also see the end of play at The McKenzie Arena for several seniors on the squad.
Chattanooga will close out the season on the road with a trip over the mountains to Western Carolina on February 23 then further east into North Carolina to take on UNC Greensboro in the regular season finale.
The Southern Conference Tournament is set to tip off Thursday, March 2 at Harrah’s Cherokee Center in Asheville, N.C., and will run through Sunday, March 5.
The non-conference slate is still under construction, much like the Roundhouse, and will be released once it is finalized.
Season tickets are on sale now online at GoMocs.com, the official website of Chattanooga Athletics and The McKenzie Arena box office. Reserve your seat today as we bring in the Shawn Poppie Era at UTC.
