Marine Veteran And Largest Private Contributor To GA Baptist Children's Home

Mr. Johnny Roy Jennings, 91, of Ringgold, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 27, 2022. He was born on Jan. 30, 1931 in Rossville, Georgia to the late Roy and Cora Jennings. He was a member of Harbor Lights Baptist Church and had been a member for many years at Burning Bush Baptist Church. Mr. Johnny was a veteran of the U.S. Marines, where he served during the Korean War in the 1st Marine Division. He retired from Combustion Engineering after 41 years of service. Mr. Johnny was the largest private contributor of the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home by giving $426,000 through recycling of newspapers, aluminum cans, cardboard and magazines. He opened his heart to take care of God’s children. Mr. Johnny was Brent’s Dad, but was also the Dad of thousands of children throughout the state of Georgia: “He Will Be Truly Missed.” 

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Gwendolyn Brown Jennings; brother, James Jennings; sister, Foye Meers; and great-granddaughter, Kaden Skates.

Survivors include his son, Brent (Denise) Jennings; brother, Bill Jennings; grandchildren, Ashley (Curtiss) Harris, Cassandra (Dylan) Jennings and Hollie (Joshua) Skates; and great-grandchildren, Krymsin, Johnathan, Jasen, Jackson, Blakely and Ruby.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at Harbor Lights Baptist Church, with Rev. Jim Powell, Dr. Ken Thompson, Dr. James Harper and Chris Hobbs officiating. The body will lie-in-state at the church two hours prior to the service on Friday. Interment will follow at Burning Bush Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends 4-9 p.m. on Thursday at Heritage Funeral Home, Battlefield Parkway.
