Queen Esther Bowles, 77, of Chattanooga, passed away on Thursday, November 16, 2023.

Queen was born in January of 1946 with the purpose of sharing her love and kindness with the world. She loved the Lord Jesus Christ and would pray with you in that moment based on the Lords’ leading. Lovingly, Queen Esther was raised by her beloved grandmother, Australia Bowles. She attended Fort Cheatam Elementary and graduated from Howard High School, class of 1966. Queen was a very active athlete at Howard, where she excelled in basketball and track. Queen Esther was a former member of the Greater New Home Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as the youth leader for the Junior Red Circle. She later united with Vision Ministries under the leadership of Dr. J.Z. Valentin where she was a faithful member who loved her church family since 1995.

Queen was employed by the state of Tennessee until retirement in 2009, where she had 30 plus years of service. Queen loved her work and the opportunities to meet people. She was beloved by her co-workers, and she gladly returned that sweet love. Queen would gladly introduce her coworkers, church members, cousins, and strangers as brothers and sisters showering love on all those she met. She would give at moment’s notice if the need arose whether it was her first or last. She passed away in the loving care of Charter Senior Living of Chattanooga where once again, Queen shared and received so much love.

Queen was preceded in death by her mother, Beatrice Bowles Dean; grandmother, Australia Bowles.

Queen Esther is survived by her extended family, Herman Griggs, Connie Griggs, Derrick Griggs, Daryl Griggs, Damon Griggs, and David Griggs, their children, as well as a host of cousins and friends.

She will lie in state on Monday, Nov. 27, at 9 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Home.

Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. in the chapel with Dr. J.Z. Valentin as the eulogist.

Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens.
