Lee University’s Symphonic Band, directed by Dr. Mark Bailey, will perform its spring concert, “A Concert of Worship,” in the Conn Center on Monday, Feb. 27, at 7:30 p.m.

The concert will feature Redemption Point Choir, under the direction of Sharon Ballinger, and Abba’s House Worship, under the direction of Jordan Bailey.

The concert will feature selections of concert wind band literature including “On an American Spiritual” by Dr. David Holsinger and the music of Eric Whitacre, as well as worship music that not only features the combined choirs and soloists, but also audience participation works. The combined worship choirs of Redemption Point and Abba’s House Worship will feature dynamic music from Charity Gayle and others such as “I Speak Jesus” and “Speak to the Mountains.”

“The evening will be filled with listener-friendly, yet powerful music, especially the piece by Dr. Holsinger, as his music always paints vivid, mental pictures,” said Dr. Bailey, professor of music and director of the Lee University Symphonic Band.

The concert will also feature secular pieces, such as “A Seal’s Lullaby,” an Eric Whitacre piece for a scrapped Disney production, as well as music from Pixar’s “The Incredibles.”

Along with conducting Lee University’s Symphonic Band, Dr. Mark Bailey teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education, conducting, and music theory.  The band is preparing for its Spring Break Tour in March to churches in Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana.

Ms. Ballinger, a Lee alum, serves as the worship pastor at RPC in Ooltewah. Jordan Bailey, also a Lee alum, is the music director at Abba’s House in Hixson.

Lee University’s 2023 Symphonic Band is made up of 40 student musicians and consists of brass, woodwind, and percussion rhythm section instrumentalists.

The concert is free, non-ticketed, and open to the public.
