Dr. Russell Sobel
The Scott L. Probasco, Jr., Distinguished Chair of Free Enterprise (Probasco Chair) will host Dr. Russell Sobel, Professor of Economics & Entrepreneurship at The Citadel, to present a talk entitled "Creative Destruction, Entrepreneurship, and Discovery" on Feb. 22 at 5:15 p.m. at the Common House, located at 1517 Mitchell Ave.
The event will open with a cocktail reception to be followed by a full dinner during Dr. Sobel’s presentation.
The term “creative destruction” came from renowned Austrian economist Joseph Schumpeter’s work exploring the process in which new technologies, procedures, and businesses replace those of the past.
Entrepreneurship is therefore both creative — in that it breeds innovation - and destructive, as it destroys processes and procedures of old. Dr. Sobel's talk will explore this process, its modern relevance, how economies can best cope with it, and its political impact.
“I am particularly excited about opening this conversation in the Chattanooga business community,” said Dr. Claudia W. Kramer, UTC’s current Probasco Chair. “Dr. Sobel’s research and expertise are a perfect match for our city of entrepreneurs and innovators, and I know that this talk will spark excellent discourse among attendees.”
The event is free to attend and open to the general public. Attendees are simply asked to register
here. Valet parking will be provided.
“I love having the opportunity to venture off campus and connect with the community through events like this one,” said Dr. Kramer. “Anyone is invited to attend, and you don’t have to have any prior connection to the university to join us. I’m looking forward to seeing new faces as we continue to expand our reach.”
