Master Seamstress Loved Crafting, Shopping, And Time With Her Family

Barbara Jean O’Rear Powell, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at home on November 21, 2024, at the age of 92.

Born on Sept. 6, 1932, in Chattanooga, she lived a life of devotion to her family.

Barbara graduated from Kirkman High School, was a member of Stanley Heights Baptist Church and retired from Shumacker & Thompson, Attorneys at Law. She was a master seamstress and enjoyed crafting. Barbara loved shopping and all things with sparkles or glitter. She loved her family dearly and especially enjoyed time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be missed by all those who loved her so much.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joseph Lawrence Powell, Sr.; parents, Harry Crawford O’Rear, Sr. and Myrtle Gladys McDaniel; siblings, Edward “Leon” O’Rear, Dorothy Frances Joy, Jack Mitchell O’Rear, and Betty Jo Sanchez; half siblings, Shirley Ruth Breedlove, James Clayton O’Rear, Clarence Michael O’Rear, Sr., and Harry Crawford O’Rear, Jr.; granddaughter in law, Megan McCullah Burrows.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Suzanne (John) Bergen and Gayle Burrows; a son, Joseph Powell, Jr. (Casey). She will be deeply missed by her precious grandchildren, Gena (John) Harrison, Michael Burrows and Hollie (Randall) Allen; and great-granddaughters, Annie Harrison, Piper Harrison and Birdie Burrows; and a half-brother, Dennis O’Rear.

The family is very thankful to Hearth Hospice for the kindness and care given to their mother.
