Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will present a special 90-minute, less than 1-mile, ranger-led hike on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m., exploring the fighting that swirled around the farm of Larkin Poe on Sept. 19 and 20, 1863. This program will begin at the Chickamauga Visitor Center, then car caravan to Poe Field, where the walking tour will begin.
Officials said, "The fighting in Poe Field was some of the most dramatic open field fighting of the battle, with multiple charges by Confederate forces across the field against strong Union positions. Join us as we take advantage of the lack of foliage to see the ground better and gain insights into these events of 1863.
"Make sure to dress appropriately for conditions and wear comfortable shoes."
