Erlanger Pulmonary And Critical Care Fellowship Receives ACGME Accreditation

  • Wednesday, February 21, 2024

Erlanger Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship, in partnership with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine – Chattanooga, was awarded the accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

ACGME is a voluntary accreditation that sets standards for effective training programs and monitors compliance with those standards. The accreditation model and process ensures and improves the quality of medical education in the United States. This allows the public to know that the residents and fellows within the program are prepared to provide safe, high-quality care now and throughout their careers.

“Our division has grown in diversity and skill set in a way that makes starting a fellowship the logical next step. We are excited to start training the next generation of pulmonary and critical care physicians,” said Radhika Shah, MD, program director of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship at Erlanger.

In the 2022-2023 academic year, ACGME had 13,066 accredited fellowship and resident programs, 182 accredited specialties and sub-specialties, and 158,079 active full and part-time fellows and residents in those programs.

“We are extremely excited about training pulmonary/critical care specialists in our region,” said James Haynes, MD, dean of the UT Health Science Center College of Medicine – Chattanooga. “Dr. Shah’s team will improve access and quality of care for critically ill patients in our region through this fellowship program. We are indebted to the Pulmonary Critical Care Department’s work to make this training platform a reality.”
