Rep. Fleischmann: Count Only Legal Americans Toward Congressional Representation - And Response (3)

  • Wednesday, April 10, 2024

H.R.7109, the Equal Representation Act. H.R. 7109 ensures that only legal American citizens are factored into the official count for Congressional districts and the Electoral College map that determines the outcome of presidential elections.

Since Day 1 of this Administration, President Biden and D.C. Democrats have gone out of their way to open our borders and incentivize millions of illegal aliens to break into our country. Currently, illegal immigrants are counted towards congressional district apportionment and allocation of Electoral College votes, which is unacceptable. For every illegal immigrant that is counted towards congressional apportionment or the allocation of Electoral College votes, a legal American citizen is disenfranchised of their right to be properly represented.

"The basic function of the once-a-decade census is to get an accurate count of legal American citizens to determine Congressional representation and how many Electoral College votes each state will receive. By including illegals in the Census Bureau's count, American citizens nationwide are disenfranchised, and confidence in our elections and governing institutions is diminished. I am proud to support this commonsense bill that not only protects every American's right to be properly represented in their government but will also help disincentivize illegal immigrants to make the journey to come to our county and illegally cross our borders.

H.R. 7109 - The Equal Representation Act:

  • Requires that the Census Bureau include a citizenship question on any future census to provide a greater understanding of the U.S. population and delineate between citizens and non-citizens for apportionment purposes.
  • Prohibits non-citizens from being counted for purposes of congressional district and Electoral College apportionment.
  • Requires that the Census Bureau publicly report on certain demographic data.
  • Is the House companion bill to S. 3659, the Equal Representation Act, introduced in the Senate by Tennessee Senator Bill Hagerty.

While the Honorable Rep. Fleischmann’s goals for HR7109 might be noble, I humbly suggest he read the Federal Constitution. It makes no mention of a citizenship test for the census and refers only to counting the number of persons in each state.

Get to work correcting the crisis at the border or get to work amending the Constitution.

I think that bill is a waste of time and funds. We do not need to add an "are you legal" box to the census. We have pressing issues to worry about and you guys are pandering to the people to get votes. I wish you guys would work this hard for the following:

Homeless
Poor
Undereducated
Disenfranchised
Veterans
Uninsured

Pick one and run with it. You and your friend Ms. Blackburn do a lot of talking but I do not see anything tangible going on in the state at all. We have lettuce legislation and chemtrails, as well. Do what we elected you for or step aside.

Thank you, Rep. Fleischmann, for spelling out the reasons and components of the Bill you have offered for consideration. It is my belief that it is the only fair way to count the number of citizens of the United States of American.

Chris Linstruth, I believe that when you referred to our Federal Constitution, you really meant the Constitution of the United States of America, which is supreme law of the United States and superseded the Articles of Confederation, the nation’s first constitution. It delineates the national frame and constrains the powers of the federal government. It separates the powers of each of the three branches of our federal government; legislative, judicial and executive.

Christopher Cooper, while I already felt sad for your lack of knowledge and understanding, now you have set my hair on fire. What was merely sadness has no become more of a situation of pity. You still refer to Senator Blackburn in a condescending manner, calling her Ms. Blackburn rather than Senator Blackburn. It’s a title that “we the people” elected her to carry.

You call on Senator Blackburn and Rep. Fleischmann to do the items on your list which would be more tangible for the state. While federal legislation does affect all states, their jobs are federal. We have a state legislature who is charged with state law. Civics is a course that is taught in high school. Even if you didn’t take civics, that is still no excuse for not understanding the workings of the government that serves you and all of us other citizens. Political Science, a college level course, is another good reference for you. Both civics and political science books can be purchased in most book stores.
