Just when you think you are smarter than your late parents you come upon a memento from the past that suggests you are not.

In a small, ring binder pamphlet recently discovered dealing with “humorous quotes on life”, “To Dad, With Love” (1984- Graphic Corp) are examples of original sayings (or recopied by some famous, and not so famous, contributors) in 81 pages.

The booklet was given to Tennessee Rambler by Rambling Rose (CB language) on Father’s Day 1986:

All of the quotes are worth repeating but the following are a selective few that may be adapted to current situations in 2024:

1. “There are plenty of good five-cent cigars in the country. The trouble is they cost a quarter. What this country really needs is a five cent nickel.” (Congress)

2. “Diplomacy: thinking twice before saying nothing.” (Joe Biden and Donald Trump)

3. “Don’t be humble: you are not that great.” (Comment to Otter in “Animal House” movie)

4. “One thing about egotists: they don’t talk about other people.”

5. “He knows nothing: he thinks he knows everything- that clearly points to a political career.” (Choo Choo City, Hamilton County, etc.)

6. “If you want to know how many friends you have, just buy a cottage on a lake.”

7. “I drink to make other people more interesting.” (and finally…)

8. “When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.”

(Any similarity to any person or entities living or dead are left to the imagination of the reader?)
