Alan Shuptrine book signing in Highlands, NC
Internationally renowned artist and Lookout Mountain resident Alan Shuptrine was a featured speaker at the Center for Life Enrichment in Highlands, NC in June.
The Highlands/Cashiers CLE is an organization the provides educational and entertaining arts programs for members and residents of the Highlands-Cashiers plateau. Several Lookout Mountain and Chattanooga residents are members of the CLE, including Dr. John and Sharon Cranwell and Penny Pollock, who were instrumental in bringing the artist to Highlands.
Officials said, "Mr.
Shuptrine provided several events, including an educational demonstration focused on The Art of Gilding. Along with the history of gilding, he discussed gold leaf as utilized by artisans for centuries, and the Old-World methods of laying leaf that he still uses today. Hands-on laying of gold leaf was offered to all attendees, while the many tools and components of this beautiful, lost art were described and shown.
"Mr. Shuptrine then provided an author’s talk and book signing reception highlighting his and Jennifer Pharr Davis’s award-winning book, I Come From A Place, which focuses on the land, people and culture of the Appalachian Trail and the Serpentine Chain. Held at a member’s private residence, Alan’s discussion brought those in attendance into the intricate and detailed watercolor paintings he created for this literary chronicle of the living South.
"A full-time painter, Mr. Shuptrine presented to the crowd a selection of some of his most recent watercolor paintings that he is creating for his upcoming artist in residency program at Scotland’s Skibo castle next summer.
"It was an art-filled week in the North Carolina mountains and Alan is looking forward to offering programming again next year for the CLE 2025 season."
