Sumedha Sonde, MD, a pulmonologist and critical care physician, has joined Hamilton Physician Group - Specialty Care.

A graduate of Adichunchanagiri Institute of Medical Sciences in India, Dr. Sonde completed her residency in anesthesiology and critical care at B.J. Medical College in India. She then moved to New York to complete an internal medicine residency at South Brooklyn Health, where she served a year as chief resident, treating patients during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
She also completed a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.

“Medicine has been my passion, and my specialty has further strengthened my enthusiasm and motivation towards the field of medicine,” Dr. Sonde said. “I am very grateful to Hamilton for giving me the opportunity to nurture my passion and, above all, serve this community.”

Dr. Sonde grew up in a family that highly valued academics, and from a young age, she felt her calling was to be a doctor. In high school, her favorite subject was biology, which helped to propel her interest in medicine.

“I walk into work every day knowing the patients are the reason I am here. I am most committed to their care,” she said. “This is why I signed up to be a pulmonologist and critical care physician — to hold their hands, be with them through some of the most arduous times of their lives and contribute to their recovery in every way I can.”

Dr. Sonde is trained to treat a range of pulmonary and sleep disorders, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary infections, lung cancer and pulmonary hypertension. Her fellowship training and anesthesia training allow her to be a well-rounded pulmonary and critical care physician.

In her spare time, Dr. Sonde enjoys running, cooking and traveling. She also participated in volunteer activities prior to her medical training, mostly focused on uplifting women in underserved areas.
