Covenant Men Upset Third Ranked Washington And Lee 3-0

The Covenant College men's soccer team hosted No. 3 Washington and Lee looking to make a statement to the country. That is exactly what the Scots did, taking down the Generals 3-0 on a cool night at Scotland Yard. Covenant improves to 4-0 on the season. 

Covenant got the party going early in the fifth minute as Jackson Hinson tapped in a goal off a shot that was saved from Whitt Tisdale. In the 20th minute, the Generals nearly equalized the game as a shot from Anthony Careccia hit the right woodwork. 

A few minutes later, the Scots hit the frame of the goal off the foot of Henry Parker. 

In the 32nd minute, Covenant keeper Eli Honeycutt made an impressive save off a point-blank header in front of his goal.  At the half, Covenant had outshot WLU 12-10.

The Generals kept up the pressure in the first 25 minutes of the second half with five shots, none of which could tie the game Covenant got its second goal in the 73rd minute as Jackson Bostrom put the ball in the  net while trying to avoid the goalie in the middle of the box. Ty Morgan had the assist. 
In the 77th minute, Covenant earned a penalty kick after a foul in the box, which Kade Theunissen converted. 

Covenant had another great opportunity in the 86th minute to make it 4-0, but Tisdale's shot from close range went over the goal. Honeycutt capped off his clean sheet with a save on WLU's final attack in the 88th minute. 

Covenant moves to 1-1 all-time against Washington and Lee. The win marks the highest ranked victory in program history.  The Generals outshot the Scots 23-20 while the Scots had an edge in shots on goal, 7-6.  WLU had the higher foul count at 18-13.

Honeycutt tied his career-high in saves for the second consecutive night with six.  Theunissen has scored a goal in his last three games.

The Scots go to Rhodes on Tuesday night for their first road match of the year.
