Covenant Women Lost First CCS Game To Huntingdon

The Covenant College women's basketball team played host to the Huntingdon Hawks in both teams' fourth conference matchup of the season. The Scots battled hard all game long but ended up dropping its first CCS game of the year being defeated 78-71. 

The first few minutes of the game saw the teams trading baskets as Lucy Benson's 3-pointer gave the Scots a 7-6 lead. Following two more baskets by Covenant, Huntingdon finished the quarter on a 7-1 run giving the visitors a 13-12 lead after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the game remained tight as a 3-pointer from Breezy Savage and two baskets inside by freshman Brooklyn Konrad kept the deficit at one, as the Scots trailed 20-19.
Savage continued to make her presence felt as she scored five consecutive to put Covenant up 28-23. The Hawks again finished the quarter strong as they outscored Covenant 9-2 in the last four minutes of the half giving them a 32-30 lead.

Covenant started the second half strong as baskets by Abby Witt, Savage, and Hannah Eidson gave it a 38-36 lead. After another quick run by Huntingdon, Abby Slaton made threes on consecutive possessions to cut Huntingdon's lead to one.. Huntingdon answered by scoring five points in the last minute to take a 54-48 lead into the fourth quarter.

Covenant's only points in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter were two free throws from Konrad as the Hawks extended their lead to 61-50. Huntingdon took their largest lead of the game at the 3:49 mark as it led 68-55. Covenant immediately answered with threes by Savage and Slaton to cut the lead to 7. With Covenant still trailing by seven going into the final minute, a jumper by Savage and two free throws from Benson cut the lead to 74-71. This was the closest they would get as Huntingdon traveled home with a 78-71 win.

Covenant moves to 9-23 all-time against Huntingdon. Savage led the way for the Scots as she scored 19 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out five assists, and had two steals. Witt also had a solid performance as she was one rebound short of a double double, tallying 14 points and nine rebounds

Covenant's last double-digit scorer was Lucy Benson who scored 12 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists. Slaton provided a spark off the bench for Covenant hitting three 3-pointers which helped keep the Scots within striking distance. Covenant outrebounded Huntingdon 44-42 but hurt itself by committing 23 turnovers compared to Huntingdon's 17.

Covenant takes on Belhaven on Thursday at 5 p.m. for Max Out Barnes night.
