Thammi Ramanan, MD, MHSC, an interventional and structural cardiologist, has joined Vitruvian Health Heart & Vascular at Hamilton, practicing at Hamilton Physician Group – Cardiology and Hamilton Medical Center.

A graduate of Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in East Lansing, Ohio, Dr. Ramanan completed an internal medicine residency at Case Western University in Cleveland, Oh. She completed a fellowship in cardiovascular disease and an additional Combined Advanced Interventional, Structural and Peripheral fellowship at the University of Buffalo Metrohealth Medical Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

Dr.
Ramanan was drawn to the workings of the heart in medical school, but she knew she wanted to be involved in health care in some way from an early age.

“I’m the first physician in my family, but my parents have always encouraged me,” Dr. Ramanan said. “I grew up thinking I wanted to be a doctor until I got into undergraduate school. Then I decided to be a rebel. I wanted to look at other options. So I went into public health, which is not very different. But I think it was one of the best decisions I made because it exposed me to the other factors that influence a patient’s health, such as where they live, the kind of occupation they have and their socioeconomic status.”

Dr. Ramanan said the appeal of one-on-one patient care, coupled with an opportunity to perform hands-on work eventually persuaded her to return to her original dream of becoming a doctor. She enjoys approaching care plans collaboratively with patients.

“I want patients to know that I really care about the person sitting in front of me,” she said. “Every time I walk into a room, I approach it as if I were caring for a member of my own family. Understanding what brings someone in and hearing their story deeply matters to me.”

Dr. Ramanan treats a range of heart-related issues, including chest pain, coronary artery disease, aortic and mitral valvular disease, aneurysms and structural heart problems.
