The Tennessee Valley Authority is asking for public comment on the Clinch River Nuclear Site Advanced Technology Park Unit 1 Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement. The Draft SEIS addresses the potential environmental effects associated with site preparation, construction, operation, and decommissioning of one small modular reactor (SMR), the GE Hitachi BWRX-300, at TVA’s Clinch River Nuclear Site in Oak Ridge, Roane County.
This SEIS is a supplement to the Clinch River Nuclear Site Advanced Nuclear Reactor Technology Park Final Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement that was completed in September 2022. The SEIS updates the PEIS with new information about potential impacts related to the project technology and resources in the areas to be disturbed.
TVA invites the public to learn and ask questions about the Draft SEIS during a public meeting scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, at the East Tennessee Economic Council, 1201 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge. In addition, a virtual meeting will also be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25. Meeting information is available at www.tva.com/nepa.
The public is invited to submit comment on the Draft SEIS. Public comments must be received or postmarked by March 18. Submit comments in writing to Carol Butler Freeman, NEPA Specialist, 400 West Summit Hill Drive, WT 11B, Knoxville, TN 37902; online at https://www.tva.com/nepa; or by email to nepa@tva.gov. All comments received, including names and addresses, will become part of the administrative record and available for public inspection.
In August, the TVA Board authorized an additional $150 million in advanced nuclear funding to support continued design work and TVA’s development of potential SMRs at its Clinch River Nuclear site. TVA believes advanced nuclear technologies will play a critical role in the region and nation’s drive toward a clean energy future, and it is a technology that America must dominate – for both energy security and national security. In total, TVA’s Board has authorized investment of up to $350 million for the design and development of SMRs at its CRN Site.
