Covenant Baseball Wins 10-9 Over Oglethorpe

The Covenant baseball team continued its road swing with a midweek battle at Oglethorpe. The game was tied late before the Scots scored a run in the ninth inning to squeeze out a victory.

Final: Covenant 10, Oglethorpe 9 With the bases loaded in the first inning, the Stormy Petrels hit a 2-RBI single to center field to start the scoring. In the second inning, an RBI sacrifice fly for Oglethorpe pushed it ahead 3-0.

The Scots scored their first run in the fourth inning after a throwing error on an attempted steal with runners at the corner.

Covenant started its big rally in the fifth inning with Josh McCaskill tying the game with a 2-RBI double to right-center field. The next batter was Hudson Couch and he put Covenant ahead with an RBI single to center field. The Scots capped off the big inning with a 2-RBI single to left field by Joseph Tolbert which put the score at 6-3.

In the bottom of the frame, the Stormy Petrels got back within a run with a 2-RBI double to right-center field.

Oglethorpe immediately tied the game right afterwards with an RBI single to center field.
An RBI groundout by Benjamin Johnson and an RBI sacrifice fly from Hudson Couch in the sixth inning put Covenant back on top 8-6.

Oglethorpe once again tied the game with two runs in the sixth inning, however in an attempt to score another run, a runner was thrown out at home plate as a result of a good relay starting in left field by Covenant.

Sam Cecil delivered Covenant's ninth run with an RBI single through the left side in the seventh inning.

Oglethorpe brought home its ninth run in the eighth inning with an RBI single to center field.
After some small ball advanced Cody Brewer to third base in the ninth inning, Roby McClarnon brought him home with an RBI groundout to put the Scots up 10-9.

The Stormy Petrels had the tying runner on second base in their last chance to tie the game, however a groundout ended things.

Covenant moves to 11-12 all-time against Oglethorpe.

The Scots threw five pitchers with RHP Ethan Goebert (2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER) picking up the win. RHP Christian Vander Veen (2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K), RHP Adkin Finch (2.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 K), RHP Isaac Leicht (0.2 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 1 BB), and RHP Jake Schock (1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) also threw for the Scots.

Cecil (3-for-5, 1 RBI, 1 BB) led the Covenant offense with three hits. It's his fourth game this season with three hits.

Covenant outhit Oglethorpe 14-13.

Oglethorpe committed six errors while Covenant had one.

Covenant returns to conference play on Friday for the start of a three-game series at Belhaven.
