John Robert Boyle
John Robert Boyle was born to James Patrick Boyle and Mary Eunice Norfolk Boyle on November 4, 1927 in Bellrose, New York. He passed away on March 19, 2025 at 97 years of age.
John received an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering at Duke University, and received his master's degree at The University of Tennessee. His illustrious career started at Tennessee Valley Authority where he worked happily for 38 years. According to his colleagues, he was considered the finest relay and protection engineer in the country. He was honored with the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) Life Fellow Award. The National Association of Professional Engineers named him TVA Engineer of the Year in 1982, and later that year he accepted the Federal Engineer of the Year Award in Washington DC. John was past chair of PSRC (Power Systems Relay Committee) in 1989 and 1990. He taught engineering classes at Chattanooga State, Georgia Tech and The University of Wisconsin. John was a sought-after moderator and instructor by top engineering, utility and manufacturing associations. He traveled internationally to share his knowledge in Indonesia, Sweden, Nigeria, and Switzerland. After retiring from TVA, he started the consulting firm Power Systems Analysis.
John was active in many groups and organizations. Throughout his life, bridge and golf brought him great joy (and frustration). He also enjoyed home projects, woodworking and hiking. He was a scout master, swim team coach, and a member of Toastmasters, where he honed his public speaking and prolific joke telling skills.
He was a founding member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, where he was involved as Senior Warden, Usher, Lay Eucharistic Minister, Men's Book Club, Supper Club, Youth Group Volunteer and church softball. Throughout his many years on Signal Mountain and at St. Timothy's, John forged lifelong friendships that enriched his life greatly.
