Charles Robert Varnell
Charles Robert Varnell, 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 18, 2025.
Preceding him in death include his beloved wife of 61 years, Edwina Varnell, and his parents, Charles D. and Annie Lee Varnell.
Charlie is survived by his loving son, Christopher (Jane); two granddaughters, Amelia Pruett (Matthew), and Christina Varnell; four cherished great-grandchildren, Andrew, Kyle, Abigail, and Graham. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Betty Jones.
Charlie was a proud graduate of Chattanooga High School and attended the University of Chattanooga, now known as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He served his country honorably for four years in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He dedicated many years to the trucking industry before embarking on a career with Norfolk Southern, from which he retired. Charlie was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church for over 70 years, as well as a member of the Cumberland Youth Foundation (CYF) and Turner Tennis Club.
Charlie was an avid tennis player throughout his life, achieving considerable success in both singles and doubles competitions, particularly during his senior years. He especially treasured his time on the court with his good friends at the CYF. Beyond the court, Charlie was a lifelong and dedicated fan of the Tennessee Volunteers and fondly remembered many Saturday gameday traditions with his family, including trips to Neyland Stadium and several Bowl Games.
The family will hold a private graveside service at the National Cemetery, officiated by Major Thaddeus Davis (Thad), an Air Force Chaplain and Associate Pastor of Hixson Presbyterian Church.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to The Tennessee State Veterans Home and Hospice of Chattanooga for their exceptional care and compassion shown to Charlie in his final days.
Arrangements are under the care of the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
