Robert "Bob" Lewis Miller
It was a rainy March 21, 1931, when Robert "Bob" Lewis Miller was born, the youngest of a sister and two brothers. After childbirth complications, his mother died a few hours later on the next day. His maternal grandmother took care of him until she died when he was four years old. He was sent into foster care and lived in many different homes.
He worked at an early age picking cotton and selling newspapers. As a young child, he moved around, living with his sister and brothers at various times, working at Chrysler Motors as a wet sander on cars in Detroit and banana boats in Miami. He graduated high school in Atlanta and joined the Air Force. When that enlistment was up, he joined the Army. At 25 years of age, he married Cherise Giesler when she graduated from high school. They built a good life together of 68 years, lived in many places in the U.S. and Germany. In his 24 years of military service, he welcomed three children, served two tours during the Korean war and three tours of the Vietnam war, where he was awarded a Bronze Star, a Vietnam service medal with one silver and four bronze stars, and other commendations. He retired in 1975 as CWO 3 from Ft. Benning, Ga., to Ringgold. After a few short-lived jobs, he obtained employment with TVA and retired from there. On Memorial Day, May 26, 2025, Bob passed away, a fitting day for a soldier of his caliber.
He was predeceased by his parents, Horace and Ruby Miller, sister Margaret Rudd, and brothers Horace (Buck) Miller, Jr., Jack Miller, and son Robert Miller, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Cherise, daughter, Robin Hutchison, son, James Miller (Sherrie), daughter-in law, Terri Hayes Miller, and grandchildren, Nate Miller (Sarah), Ian Hutchison and Noel Miller.
A funeral service led by Rev. Michael Turner will be at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors on Wednesday, June 4, at 12:30 pm.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home, friends and family will gather at the cemetery.
