Chattanooga State Community College hosted a celebration honoring two community partners, Erlanger Health System and Unum, during the Tennessee Board of Regents Excellence in Philanthropy Award Ceremony. The TBR Excellence in Philanthropy Awards recognize individuals or organizations and their contributions to Chattaooga State, the Chattanooga Community and colleges in the TBR system.

“These organizations have not only demonstrated generosity, but also leadership, and most especially, an unselfish commitment to the success of our students,” said Dr.
Rebecca Ashford, ChattState president.

This year, the Regent’s Award for Excellence in Philanthropy was given to Erlanger, which has contributed more than $1.75 million to Chattanooga State since 1995. Support from Erlanger includes funding for scholarships and faculty chairs of excellence, as well as direct involvement in clinical training and special events.

“This award for Excellence in Philanthropy really reflects something that’s been part of our DNA for decades: a deep belief in giving back, especially when it comes to education and training the next generation of healthcare professionals,” said Erlanger CEO Jim Coleman. “I’m truly honored to accept this award on behalf of the Erlanger Health System.”

In November 2024, Mr. Coleman served as the guest of honor at Chattanooga State’s annual Dinner of Firsts, which raises funds for scholarships for students who are first in their family to go to college. A first-generation college student himself, Mr. Coleman endured a roast from his friends and colleagues in the name of helping families start new higher education traditions.

“Our partnership with Chattanooga State has grown into something really special,” he said. “We are proud of what we have built together, and even more excited about what is still ahead.”

TBR also recognized Unum with the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Philanthropy for its enduring partnership with Chattanooga State. Since 1996, Unum has donated over $300,000 to Chattanooga State in support of student scholarships, tutoring services, ChattState Give Day, and the establishment of the first student health clinic at a Tennessee community college.

“We’ve supported the work of Chattanooga State for nearly 30 years. We believe in ChattState’s mission of enriching the lives of students and their families, developing a talented workforce and partnering with the community,” said Liz Ahmed, AVP, People and Communications. “Education and workforce development are central to our community focus. We invest in programs that raise student aspirations, increase exposure to careers and remove barriers to academic and early career success.”

Dr. Ashford thanked the College’s philanthropic partners for their ongoing efforts to support student success and Chattanooga’s workforce.

“Congratulations to our friends and partners on receiving the 2025 Excellence in Philanthropy Awards,” Dr. Ashford said. “The winners of this year’s honors exemplify the spirit and values of Chattanooga State. We are extremely grateful for your loyalty, dedication, and philanthropic efforts that have improved outcomes for ChattState’s students. With your ongoing support, we will continue to improve the lives of our students and the prosperity of our community.”
