Environmental Tests Show Lookout Valley Elementary School Is Safe

Building Clean-Up To Begin, Parent Meeting Set For Wednesday

  • Tuesday, August 31, 2004

Tests showed there is no contamination in the burned Lookout Valley Elementary School, county school officials said Tuesday evening.

Officials said they had just learned the results of 21 environmental and structural tests performed on Lookout Valley Elementary after a Saturday night fire caused extensive smoke damage to the school.

The tests performed by Helton and Associates Inc., an environmental consulting firm, showed "there was no contamination in the building."

Testing was performed on eight different sections of the school. “The results of the 21 air tests and dust samples were all clean,” said Bud Helton of Helton and Associates.

School officials say a thorough clean-up process will be conducted by a certified fire restoration company contracted by the Tennessee School Boards Association based in Nashville. Work is scheduled to begin on Wednesday.

An information meeting for parents, teachers and staff will also be held on Wednesday at Lookout Valley Baptist Church at 6 p.m. The church is located at 23 Lilac Ave.

“We want to be sure everyone has a chance to ask any questions, and to be assured that all necessary steps are being taken to have students and staff return to a clean and safe building,” said county schools Superintendent Jesse Register.

Lookout Valley Elementary has been closed since Monday. School officials say further information on the school’s startup date will be available later in the week. No decision has been made at this time as to when students may make up missed days.
