We recently ate lunch at the Riverview Deli & Yogurt located at 1150 Hixson Pike. This is basically a sandwich and salad deli that also serves yogurt. The deli was brought to our attention by a regular reader of “The Dish” articles who frequently wrote us letters recommending different places. We were sad to learn on our visit that she had recently passed away.
The deli is a small, unassuming place, almost unnoticeable in their location. The inside doesn’t have a lot of room, but is cozy with a friendly atmosphere. They have a “want to please” attitude.
You can build your own sandwich from the list of breads, wraps, meats and cheeses, along with condiments (such as Sprouts and Hot Mustard). The lady recommending us to try the deli said we absolutely needed to try the soups - but, just our luck, no soup or chili the day we were there!
Items such as Chicken and Tuna Salad are made from scratch and the produce used on the sandwiches and in the salads, is purchased at local produce stands. The owner, Gail Atchley (the lady behind the counter), says she refuses to buy produce that has been gassed in order to artificially induce the ripening process which not only takes away some of the taste, but also the essential minerals. I’m sure we’ve all purchased those beautiful shiny red tomatoes only to find them hard and grainy.
We both ordered a sandwich listed on the chalkboard. Wayne selected the Loaded Cheeseburger and I went for the grilled Reuben and both of us ordered the Potato Salad. We both liked the Potato Salad as it was not full of sweet pickles or overly-mayonnaised. Wayne felt the chucks were larger than preferred, but that certainly didn't affect the taste.
The juicy Cheeseburger was quite sizeable and started falling apart before he was finished. The Reuben sandwich had plenty of Kraut, but I kept trying to figure out what was missing from the taste. It was a good sandwich, but there was something I just couldn't put my finger on - until I was almost finished - then I realized - no mustard. I forgot to order it, and it definitely made a difference.
We topped off our lunch with a delicious, crisp cookie - sort of a jumbo thumbprint. The frosting seemed to be a cross between a frost and a glaze - too heaving to be a glaze and too light to be a frosting. It was also not overly sweet which made it a winner as far as our taste buds were concerned.
Hours for the Riverview Deli are Monday through Thursday from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM and Friday and Saturday until 4:30 PM. They are closed on Sunday.
