Zoo Plans $2.9 Million Expansion, New Entrance

  • Tuesday, February 28, 2006

The Chattanooga Zoo is planning a $2.9 million expansion including a new entranceway off Holtzclaw Avenue.

Darde Long, Zoo executive director, said it will include a new African penquin exhibit, a carousel, concessions, gift shop and ticketing area.

Bud Ellis, creator of the animals for the carousel at Coolidge Park, has already created several animals for the new Zoo carousel, Ms. Long said. She said the theme is extinct animals.

Ms. Long said no city funds are being requested. She said the bulk of the money will be raised privately.

An application will be made for a $550,000 Kresge grant.

The project also includes a new service road leading toward the McCallie Avenue side of the park.

Rob Healy, city parks director, said there will not be a loss of any ball fields as the Zoo expands toward Holtzclaw.
