Former Hiwassee College President Dies

Past Hiwassee President Dr. Horace N. Barker passed away Monday at age 91, following a long illness.
Dr. Barker spent his life working for the education of youth from the Appalachian Region. He first became interested in Hiwassee while serving as pastor of First United Methodist Church in Abingdon, VA. While pastor at First United in Madisonville, TN, he served part-time as college chaplain. Dr. Barker became college president in 1955 and served Hiwassee for twenty-five years. Many of the current buildings on the Hiwassee campus were constructed during his administration.

A focal point of the campus, the Barker Learning Center, is named in his honor.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Buckner Memorial United Methodist Church on the Hiwassee College campus. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Buckner Memorial United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Hiwassee College Cemetery. The body will lie-in-state one hour prior to the service.
