Teammates Keyron Sheard and Qavotstaraj Waddell of Cecil Community College (Md.) have signed National Letters of Intent to play basketball and continue their education at Chattanooga, UTC head coach John Shulman announced Tuesday.
Sheard, a 6-1 point guard from Red Bank, New Jersey, averaged 11.7 points and was second in the nation in assists at 9.6 per game. Sheard has won more games than any player in the history of Cecil’s program, leading the Seahawks to a 66-5 record in his two seasons. Sheard led the Seahawks to an NJCAA Division II national championship as a freshman and a fifth place finish this season, earning all-tournament honors at this year’s national tournament.
“Keyron is the straw that stirs the drink.” Shulman said. “He is a terrific assist guy who is also a threat from outside. More importantly, Keyron is a true leader. A winner with a capital “W”. He really understands the game and is a great addition to our program.”
Waddell, a 6-10 center from Norfolk, Va., played one season at Maryland Eastern Shore before transferring to Cecil. Waddell, called “Q” by friends and teammates, averaged 6.8 points and 9.5 rebounds per game for the Seahawks.
“Q is a relentless rebounder” remarked Shulman. “He is a really long lefty who gets every rebound he touches. He was 24th in the nation in rebounds per game. Around the basket, he dunks every thing he can and is a high energy guy. He is also a defensive presence. He changes a lot of shots. He is a really athletic five, who when teamed with (Nicchaeus) Doaks and (Matt) Gywnne gives us a very athletic frontcourt.”
The pair was part of a Cecil Community College team which was 33-3 and won 22 consecutive games before falling in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Division II tournament, earning a fifth-place finish.
“Coach Bill Lewit has built a great program at Cecil and we are happy to get two quality players who know how to win and are used to being a part of a winning program.”
Sheard and Waddell join a signing class which includes Brandon Dunson, a 6-3 guard from Central Catholic High School in Bloomington, Ill. Dunson signed during November’s early signing period.
