Three interpretive programs will be held at Chickamauga Battlefield on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. All programs begin at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a bottle of water. All walking tours are approximately one-half mile or less.
On Friday at 6:30 p.m. a park ranger will lead an interpretive program entitled “Ambrose Bierce at Chickamauga.” The world famous author Ambrose Bierce was a veteran of the Battle of Chickamauga. The Civil War had a profound effect on him and is reflected in his writings. This program will tell Ambrose Bierce’s story and discuss his writings. The tour will take approximately two hours.
On Saturday at 10:30 a.m. a park ranger will lead a program that will focus on Colonel John T. Wilder and his Lightning Brigade. Wilder’s Mounted Infantry Brigade carried Spencer seven shot repeating rifles. The Brigade’s actions during the Battle of Chickamauga revealed the effectiveness of these weapons. This tour will take approximately two hours.
On Sunday at 1:30 p.m. a park ranger will lead a walking and driving tour that will discuss the actions of Lieutenant George Van Pelt’s 1st Michigan Battery. Participants will car caravan to the Winfrey Field and walk to the position of Van Pelt’s Battery. The tour will take approximately one hour.
