Foster, George Lane Sr.

  • Saturday, January 9, 2010

George Lane Foster Sr., died peacefully on Friday afternoon.

Mr. Foster was born on July 18, 1931 to W. G. and Quintene Foster. He graduated from The Baylor School in 1949. He received an academic scholarship to the University of Chattanooga and graduated in 1952.

Mr. Foster served in the Army. While stationed in Japan, he received his acceptance to Vanderbilt School of Law. At Vanderbilt, he was associate editor of the Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif.

Mr. Foster published several short stories and Law Review articles. Mr. Foster graduated from Vanderbilt Law School in 1957. He met his wife, Monterey Hart MacCue at Vanderbilt. They were married from 1955 until Mrs. Foster’s passing in 1987.

Mr. and Mrs. Foster moved to Lookout Mountain where they belonged to the Lookout Mountain Golf Club and Fairyland Club. Mr. Foster was the superintendent of the Sunday School at the Church of the Good Shepherd for 19 years.

Mr. Foster began his law career as an associate with Whitaker, Hall & Haynes which later became Hall, Haynes, Lusk & Foster. Mr. Foster loved the practice of law. Even with his large frame, powerful voice, and shirt tail hanging out, he had a remarkable ability to engage a jury. He was known as one of the lions of defense.

Mr. Foster also loved to play golf. It was his dream to play the top 100 golf courses in the world. He played over half of those famous courses. Mr. Foster would complete the round without the best score, but always with the most joy and the best story of the day.

Mr. Foster’s optimism was evident during many card games with his dear friends at the Mountain City Club for over 40 years.

In 1990, Mr. Foster married Chris Helms. They enjoyed golf trips and trips to Disney World. He liked to ride roller coasters. As evident by his life’s activities, he lived his life to the fullest with great optimism and joy.

He is survived by one brother, James Quinten Foster; his son, George Lane Foster, Junior (Debbie); his daughter, Beth Foster Janney (Alan); his wife, Chris; his nephew, William M. Foster (Nancy); and, his grandchildren Taylor Boyd Foster, Natalie Lane Foster, John Cole Janney, and Blake Coddington.
