  • Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Seven new sculptures have been selected for the Fourth Biennial Exhibition, which will be on view April, 2010 - October, 2011. Representing artists from four states, the works will be placed along First Street, Renaissance Park and other public green spaces throughout Chattanooga's urban core.

Through an international juried competition, the works were selected from 900 proposals submitted by 94 artists from across the United States, The Netherlands and Poland. Works were selected by members of the mayor-appointed Public Art Committee.

Selected artists and works include:

· “Need a Bigger Hammer…to Build a Better World,” by Jeff Hackney, Hillsborough, N.C.

· “The Soil Was Not Overly Loose,” by Paul Howe, Selden, N.Y.

· “Arch II,” by Ann Jon, Becket, Ma.

· “Purification,” by Thomas Matsuda, Conway, Ma.

· “Blue Boy – Pull Toy #1,” by John Petrey, Chattanooga

· “Air Guitar,” by Mike Roig, Carrbaro, N.C.

· “Playtoon,” by Adam Walls, Laurinburg, N.C.

Initiated in 2005, the Sculpture Biennial continues to be an important part of Chattanooga’s growing public art program. On view through October 2010, these pieces will join Chattanooga's public art collection, which is comprised of 42 temporary and 100 permanent pieces.

Public Art Chattanooga is housed within Chattanooga Parks and Recreation. Along with managing a growing collection of public art, other programs include Art on Main, On the Fence and Art in the Neighborhoods.
