Dogs and fireworks don’t mix, so McKamey Animal Center is looking for volunteers to spend time comforting the animals in the shelter on what could otherwise be a scary evening.
“Animals don’t appreciate the July 4th celebrations the way we do, they just hear a lot of unusual bangs and pops that can be terrifying, particularly when they are already nervous in the shelter setting,” said Executive Director Inga Fricke. “A soft, comforting human voice can be just the thing to help them feel better.”
Volunteers are asked to arrive at MAC at 7:30 p.m. and stay through 9:30 p.m. to comfort the animals through the bulk of the local firework activities. Participants are encouraged to bring their own chair and a book or other quiet activity; water and snacks will be provided. Children aged 10 and up are welcome as long as they are accompanied by an adult.
Space is limited, interested individuals can sign here.
“Remember that July 4th can be a scary time for your owned animals too,” said Ms. Fricke. “Bring your pet inside, consult with your veterinarian about possible stress-relieving medications and make sure that they have proper identification (collar with tag, microchip, license) in case they do get lost.”
