A year ago I wrote an article about the absence of horns in today’s music (link). I was complaining about the lack of horns in bands playing today. Now, here is the dilemma – was I right and my article started a revolution that revived horns in today’s music world, or was I complaining about something that simply was not actually factual? Since writing that article, we have been inundated with bands using horns. (I use the word horns, but I am including brass and woodwind instruments for you picky readers. Bill)

Since writing that article, we have had Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Grupo Fantasmo, SkyHi Band, Space Capone, Here Come The Mummies, 20 acts at Riverbend with horns, and a big time horn-based band this Saturday at Riverfront Nights with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Even Gregg Allman brought a sax player. Chris Gomez, front-man for Bud Lightning even says he would love to have a horn in the band. I am a genius! Well, maybe not. All of these bands were around long before I wrote the article, so I can’t take credit for the resurgence. Whatever the reason, I am one happy camper, and based on the crowds, apparently you are, too.

Oh yeah. I mentioned the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. It’s their turn to come to Chattanooga and show the entire music listening world why horns rule. How many players would you say are in the Dirty Dozen Brass Band? 12? A baker’s dozen, 13? Wrong. Try 8. If you listened to Jeff Styles’ masterful interview with a member of the band on Wednesday, you know why. There are 8, so that’s a New Orleans dozen.

This will be a fun time, this Dirty Dozen Brass Band on Saturday night, right on the riverfront by the pier about 7 p.m. Bring your toe-tapping shoes and dancing feet, cuz this band will definitely have you up and moving. Here is a link to their website, but you really have to see them in person to appreciate the music. Click here for the link. A great local band, Ogya, opens for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

There is a new music venue in town - The Southside Saloon & Bistro, located on Chestnut Street about a block from T-Bones. It used to be the Red Lantern. They are going to be featuring live music and they want musicians to stop by and talk about playing there. This place is very historic, having been a saloon back in 1909. Welcome!

What’s wrong with the Cadillac Saints? The band started a year ago and has hit the Chattanooga music scene big-time, but perplexes me. They were already good – but now they are better. How can this be? I heard them play a bit last week and they sounded great. Folks, this is a darn fine band, with a great, clean sound. They will be at Rhythm & Brews tonight, so go see for your own self.

Speaking of horns, Space Capone returns to Chattanooga on Friday at Rhythm & Brews. I was real proud to have brought them to Riverbend last year, as they are quickly becoming a Chattanooga favorite.

I tend to stay away from politics in this column, but with the Governor’s race on the line today, I can’t help but encourage you to vote. I have not checked with this candidate’s stance on live music, but he is an interesting character. His name is Basil Marceaux Dot Com, and he has been featured on the national news, Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert. Here is a clip from Colbert here. Click on that and good some good insight on the candidate. Maybe I should change my name to Bob Payne Dot Com.

Bob’s Pick-O-The –Weekend is Riverfront Nights on Saturday evening, with The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, with Ogya opening.

Bob’s Pick-O-The-Week is the Cadillac Saints and The Last Straw, appearing tonight at Rhythm & Brews.
