Hike To Glen Falls, And A Fond Farewell To Musician Marc Trovillion

  • Tuesday, November 5, 2013

Fifteen-year-old Holden Trovillion led a group-hike on Saturday, up a steep and well-worn trail from his dad’s house in St. Elmo to Glen Falls on the side of Lookout Mountain.  Each member of the group carried a unique bottle holding Marc Trovillion’s cremated remains.

When the group reached Glen Falls, they read poems, shared memories, and then scattered Marc’s ashes to the south, east, north, west (toward his Memphis birthplace), the sky, and finally into their hearts.

Mr. Trovillion, former bassist for the Nashville alt-country band, lambchop died at his St. Elmo residence Oct. 10, from an aortic aneurism.  He was 56.  Band-mate Jonathan Marx issued a statement to the alt-weekly Nashville Scene that was picked up by major music magazines including this article in Rolling Stone: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/marc-trovillion-ex-lambchop-bassist-dead-at-56-20131018#ixzz2j43V08Nd in which he emphasized Trovillion's "freewheeling spirit…a crucial element in the band's eclectic style:  No matter where lambchop performed — in smoky practice sessions, or playing the great concert halls of Europe — Marc’s steady, solid bass playing and his innate sense of humor served as the glue that kept lambchop together.”

Mr. Trovillion performed in Chattanooga with Horses are Heroes, various incarnations of the Shaking Ray Levis, and with many other connoisseurs of great music and vinyl records. He was a master-craftsman and transformed wood into art.

The day before his passing, he finished work on Ann Law’s Elder Mountain house.  She said, "I am still numb, hearing Marc's voice when he told me he was waiting for the Affordable Health Care act to kick in so he could do something about his eyesight...never even mentioning or knowing about his heart. Sometimes I think he even looked over his glasses and closed his eyes when "feeling" for the right piece! Spending two months working with this guy was such a life-changing experience."

Marc leaves behind a son, Hatch; two brothers; his mother; and many who loved him. He will be dearly missed. For those who would like to honor Marc’s memory, a trust has been set up for his son, Hatch. Checks can be made out to the Marc Trovillion Legacy Trust and mailed to 825 Kirkwood Ave., Nashville, Tn. 37204.
