Esther Brown
Esther Allen Brown, 94, of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, died, surrounded by her loving family, on Sunday, October 5, 2014.
Esther was born on March 2, 1920, in Nashville, to Esther Sanford and Horace Leonard Allen.
Esther and her sister, Martha, lost their mother in 1928, and, due to their father’s business travels, went to live with their dear Aunt Mary and Uncle Campbell Brown. After time spent in Quantico, Va., and Haiti, for Campbell’s military service, Esther attended Springside School in Philadelphia and graduated in 1938 with strong mathematics skills. She then attended Miss Garrett’s Business School for professional training.
Esther married Edward Emerson Brown, Jr. in Ft. Sill, Okl., on Nov. 6, 1942, and set up their first home in Nevada City, California. A devoted couple, the two were married for 71 years and raised five children together on Lookout Mountain. Esther and Ed were fortunate to spend the winter months at John’s Island in Vero Beach, Fl., for 41 years.
Esther was an accomplished equestrian, riding hunters and jumpers to win ribbons and cups in many competitions over the years. As a member of The Junior League of Chattanooga, she became involved with the Red Cross and committed much of her time to serving others. She was also a proud member of the Colonial Dames and an avid golfer, enjoying the game with her husband, family and friends. A lifelong Catholic, Esther was an active member of Our Lady of the Mount Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Esther Sanford and Horace Leonard Allen; aunt and uncle, Mary and Campbell Brown; husband Edward Emerson Brown, Jr., and son-in-law, George Nelson Dickinson III.
She is survived by her sister, Martha A. Allen; daughter, Sanford Brown Dickinson; sons, Edward Emerson Brown III, Allen Campbell Brown, Campbell Huxley Brown and Leonard Harvey Brown; daughters-in-law, Emily Garth Brown and Rhonda Voges Brown; grandchildren, Kimberly Dickinson French, Allen Campbell Brown Jr., Mary Dickinson Trammell, Emily Brown Johnson, Thornton Garth Brown, Winston Garth Brown, Emerson Matthews Brown, Eleanor Emerson Brown and Robert Huxley Brown; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Parish Hall at Our Lady of the Mount Catholic Church on Lookout Mountain from 5-6 p.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 8, following a private mass and burial.
The family offers special thanks to Esther’s caregivers.
