Dr. Tonia Cox, a pediatrician at CHI Memorial Pediatric Care Associates, says getting a flu vaccine is the most effective way to stay well. For the past two years, flu activity in Hamilton County has spiked in mid-December, according to the Hamilton County Health Department.
“The flu causes a miserable illness that can interfere with holiday plans, cause you or your child to miss work or school, and sometimes triggers life-threatening complications. Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu shot every year. That includes women who are pregnant and people with serious health conditions”, says Dr. Cox. “The flu mist, or nasal vaccine, is an option for people between the ages of 2-49, but many shipments have been delayed from the manufacturer so make sure you check with your provider to see if the mist is available. Those 65 and older should ask if they need the high dose vaccine.”
“Preventing the spread of cold and flu germs is our second line of defense”, says Dr. Cox. “Stay home if you are sick. Take care of yourself so you feel better sooner and avoid spreading illness to others who may be vulnerable due to age or medical condition.”
Dr. Cox also recommends washing your hands well with warm water and soap, or using hand sanitizer, before eating, touching your face, or after touching objects that may be contaminated (public door knobs, elevator buttons, shopping carts, etc.). “Always cover your face when sneezing or coughing, and encourage your children to do the same.”
Sleep and diet are essential to staying healthy, she said. “Support your immune system by getting plenty of sleep (most adults need 8 hours) and water, eating a well-balanced diet, getting regular exercise, and trying to keep your stress level down”, said Dr. Cox. “Try to avoid skipping meals in anticipation of overeating. Maintaining regular mealtimes and watching portion sizes will help you avoid weight gain over the holidays. During holiday parties, take advantage of veggie and fruit trays, and take small servings of rich cheeses, dips, and desserts.”
Dr. Cox says routine and reflection are important. “Trying to maintain a sense of balance in our lives, remembering why we celebrate these holidays, can help make them happier and healthier.”
