Lee Tennis Loses Two In Mississippi

CLINTON, Miss. – The Lee University tennis teams traveled to the far Western reaches of the Gulf South Conference (GSC) to take on Mississippi College Saturday morning at the MC Tennis Complex. The Lady Flames were edged 5-4, while the Flames fell by a 6-3 margin.

The two squads will take the short trip up I-75 to face Tennessee Wesleyan College on Tuesday. The non-conference matches are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

LADY FLAMES 4, MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE 5
Mississippi College (4-4, 1-2 GSC) won two of the three doubles matches to take an early lead. Marta Garcia-Nieto and Krista Good gave the Lady Flames (5-6, 1-6 GSC) a quick 1-0 lead with an 8-3 defeat of Katie Reid and Karly Matthews.

Sofia Gonzalez-Carrera teamed with Christa Owen to hold off Tonya McGraner and Maclain Yowarsky, 8-6. Jodie Rice and Christy North were edged 9-7 at No. 3 doubles by Brenner Keller and Courtney Schrock.

Morgan Friedlander took down Katie Kema 6-4 in both sets of the No. 6 singles competition to even the team score, but the Lady Choctaws would win at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots to pull within one of clinching the team victory.

Rice outlasted Matthews (7-5, 7-5) and Garcia-Nieto held off Reid (7-5, 7-6) to set up the No. 4 singles slot to as winner-take-all. Good won the first set 6-4, but Schrock forced a third set with a 6-1 mark in the second set. In the final set, Schrock edged Good 6-4 to give MC the win.

FLAMES 3, MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE 6
The Choctaws (3-6, 1-2 GSC) grabbed the first point with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles. The Flames (1-9, 0-6 GSC) carried a 2-1 lead into singles action with wins at No. 2 and No. 1 doubles.

Ignacio Salom and Alberto Calle beat Joan Valy and Matthew Martin, 8-6, while Rhys Milne and Daniel Hardesty won 9-7 over Lucio Menezes and Petar Damjanovic.

Mississippi College won the first three singles matches to take move in front 4-2. Milne earned a three-set victory over Martin (6-1, 3-6, 6-3) to pull Lee back to within one point. The Choctaws ended Lee’s hopes of a comeback by posting a win at No. 5 singles and supplied the final margin with a win at the No. 6 spot.
