Boyd Proposes Change In How School Architects Are Chosen; Coppinger Does Not Go Along

  • Wednesday, January 27, 2016

County Commissioner Tim Boyd is proposing a change in how architects are chosen on school building projects.

The current process has a review committee that selects three finalists for a specific project. The county mayor and school superintendent then choose from those three.

Commissioner Boyd, saying it would bring more transparency to the process, recommended adding to the county mayor and school superintendent the commissioner and school board member for the district where the project is being built.

County Mayor Jim Coppinger said the commissioner and board member already have input, and he said the proposal "doesn't have anything to do with transparency at all."

It was noted that the current arrangement was worked out by agreement of the County Commission and School Board in 2004.

County Attorney Rheubin Taylor said in reality the school board has entire control over the process.

Commissioner Marty Haynes said he was concerned that if the process is opened back up it would call for a new agreement and the school system might not go along this time.

Commissioner Joe Graham said the County Commission still has the final say-so on architects and school building projects.
