  • Saturday, July 2, 2016

A man was killed and several were injured in two separate accidents on I-75 Saturday morning.

The two wrecks shut down I-75 southbound for an extended period of time. The Chattanooga Police Department's Traffic Division was investigating both incidents.

In the first accident, a passenger in a Ford Explorer was killed in a wreck on I-75 south at the I-24 split.

At 6:40 a.m., the Chattanooga Police Department's Traffic Division was called on a fatality crash.

Police said it was learned that a 2015 Ford Explorer was traveling southbound on I-75 from Detroit to Savannah.

Curtis Byrd Jr. was driving the vehicle and his uncle, Wilbert Byrd, was the passenger.

Curtis Byrd failed to maintain his lane, drifting off to the left side of the road where he struck a guardrail. It entered the occupant area of the Explorer, causing fatal injuries to Wilbert Byrd.

Curtis Byrd received minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

There are no charges in this case at this time.

The second accident was at I-75 and Volkswagen southbound, and involved two vehicles. Three people were transported by Hamilton County EMS to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
