The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a society of women who are direct descendants of Revolutionary War patriots, supports Historic Preservation, Education, and Patriotism. So far in 2017, DAR members worldwide have volunteered over one million hours in service to America and beyond.
The Chickamauga chapter, which draws its members from all of greater Chattanooga, will kick off the 230th Anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution with “Bells Across Chattanooga” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17. Local churches will be invited to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution by ringing the sound of freedom across the city.
In addition to “Bells Across Chattanooga,” they will host a booth at the Chattanooga Market from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., on Sunday, Sept. 17. To highlight Constitution Week, under a 2’x4’ “Celebrate U.S. Constitution” banner, there will be a display of the U.S. Constitution, a “visit” from four of the signers of the U.S. Constitution (life-size cutouts of George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, and James Madison) with whom guests can take their picture, and a small U.S. Constitution pocket booklet for families to take home.
The DAR Chickamauga Chapter Schools Committee and Constitution Week Committee members will deliver packets to 21 local schools with information to teachers about Constitution Week along with posters for the schools to display on their bulletin boards. In addition to local school awareness, the Chapter will ask the main Hamilton County Public Library to display the U.S. Constitution along with life-size cutouts of four of the signers.
