Martha Grandy Lagod, 84, of Chattanooga, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, February 14, 2018.

Martha was the daughter of Rodney and Marion Grandy.  She and her sister and three brothers grew up in a small three-bedroom house in Chattanooga that still stands.  Every Saturday her mother, Marion, hosted hotdog and coke lunches for the extended family and her father would be in the workshop in the garage with their grandchildren.

Martha attended City High and graduated from the University of Chattanooga where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She and a group of her sorority sisters continued to get together for lunches and bridge for over 40 years. Martha met the love of her life, Chester Lagod, at UC.  They married and raised their three boys in Chattanooga.

She taught elementary school for over 20 years and was a very talented and skilled tennis player. Martha was a good friend with a keen sense of humor and made the world’s best potato salad. She and Chester spent their time watching their grandchildren grow up. She loved playing family games and beach time at Kiawah with all of her family. Her sons thank her for being their first Valentine.

Martha is survived by her three sons and their spouses and partners, Martin Lagod and Debbie Mesloh of San Francisco, CA; Timothy and Lynn Lagod of Marietta, GA; Randall and LaDonna Lagod of Marietta, GA; eight grandchildren and one great grandson, Stephanie Kaufman of San Francisco, CA; Cassandra Lagod of Apex, NC; Jake Lagod of San Diego, CA; Zachary Lagod of San Francisco, CA; Sam Lagod of Charleston, SC; Hannah Lagod, a student at James Madison; Chester Lagod, a student at Georgia Tech; Cole Lagod of Marietta; and Tate Maverick Lagod Forman of Apex, NC.   She is also survived by her sister and two brothers, Marion Burris of Chattanooga, David Grandy of Chattanooga and Jay Grandy of Yakima WA.

Memorial services will be held at Heritage Funeral Home on Monday, Feb. 19, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer a donation to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research.
