Planners Recommend Against Zoning Change That Would Allow Alcohol At Store Near Chambliss Childrens Home

  • Thursday, November 14, 2019

The Planning Commission has recommended against a zoning change that would allow alcohol sales at a store located near the Chambliss Childrens Home in Brainerd.

Sean Daniels said he needed to add beer sales to his Menlo Park Grocery at 3630 Ridgeside Dr.

He said it was unfair to allow it at larger stores in the vinicity, including the Walmart Neighborhood Store on Shallowford Road and not his.

Several neighbors vouched for his character and said they had no problem with the change from C-5 to C-2.

Mr. Daniels said 279 persons signed a petition in favor.

Opponents said it was the fourth try for the grocery to get beer sales.

They said it would lead to crime and put nearby residents in jeopardy.

Phil Acord, longtime director of the Childrens Home, also spoke against it.

The final decision will be made by the City Council on Dec. 10.
