Erlanger Health System has achieved certification from DNV-GL for total hip and knee replacement, as well as pioneered the first total ankle replacement certification.
Officials said, "These certifications are based on the guidelines of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and recognize program excellence in patient care and outcomes.
"Prior to Erlanger’s certification, DNV-GL did not have a Total Ankle Replacement certification. The two organizations worked together to create a certification dedicated to helping improve quality and patient safety.
Together, both groups analyzed the guidelines from the AAOS to create requirements which benefit patients through providing quality care, positive outcomes and increased patient safety. Certification validates that facilities and services meet or exceed standards of care."
“Our comprehensive joint replacement team continues to excel in orthopaedic patient care,” said Dr. Mark G. Freeman, medical director of Erlanger Orthopaedic Institute. “This is yet another example of a third party, objective and rigorous process that has certified Erlanger as a center of excellence in hip and knee replacement, and actually set the standard as the first in the country for ankle replacement. Patients in this community and region have access to a truly special program at Erlanger with better surgical outcomes and more satisfying patient experiences.”
The Joint Replacement Program is designed to provide a full spectrum care for the patients and their families before surgery, during their hospital stay and after surgery. This ensures patients are able to return to an active lifestyle as quickly as possible. This is accomplished by a comprehensive multispecialty team which includes surgeons, physical therapists, advanced practice nurses, nurses, patient care technicians, case managers, and many other hospital and outpatient team members.
DNV GL is a world-leading certification body. The organization aims to help businesses assure the performance of their organizations, products, people, facilities and supply chains through certification, verification, assessment and training services. The DNV-GL survey emphasizes results and creative thinking, not just following checklists, officials said.
