John Monroe
Chattanooga Police Department Sergeant John Monroe died unexpectedly on Thursday at his home. He had been with the department since 1998.
The Chattanooga Police Department said on Facebook, "The Chattanooga Police Department lost an outstanding officer and cherished friend today.
"Sergeant John Monroe passed away unexpectedly at his home while off-duty. He has been a selfless public servant, an outstanding supervisor, and a trusted leader with the Chattanooga Police Department since 1998. Sgt. Monroe will be remembered for his kindness, integrity, and commitment to serving others.
"Please keep Sgt. Monroe's family and friends in your thoughts as they move through the difficult time ahead of them."
Sgt. Monroe had served with the Chattanooga Police Department since 1998. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. serving as sergeant from 1987-1993 where he was recipient of The Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Overseas Service Ribbon. He was a member of the U.S. Marine Drum & Bugle Corps. for five years. Sgt. Monroe served as Marine Security Guard for President George H.W. Bush, President Bill Clinton and President George W. Bush.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, at 11:30 a.m. at the Dallas Bay Baptist Church, 8305 Daisy Dallas Road, Hixson, with Pastor Ken Duggan officiating. Chattanooga Police Chief David Roddy along with Sgt. Monroe’s two sons will also be speaking.
Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors.
The family will receive friends on Monday, from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. and 5–8 p.m. at Dallas Baptist Church.
