The Erlanger Health System Board of Trustees has called a special meeting amid reports that CEO Kevin Spiegel will be dismissed.

The meeting is Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the POB room at the main campus on E. Third Street.

Mr. Spiegel has led Erlanger in soaring growth and a number of other accomplishments, including setting up of the Children's Hospital Outpatient Center.

However, sources said he has gotten on bad terms with a number of physicians.

His future at the hospital was debated at a recent called board meeting, but no action was taken.

One issue is the amount of severance pay he would receive. Amounts discussed have ranged from $500,000 to $2 million. At the recent meeting, attorney John Konvalinka was in attendance and is believed to represent Mr. Spiegel in contract talks.

Mr. Spiegel, who came to Chattanooga in 2013 from Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, has indicated he wants to keep the Erlanger post. He said he was working to make recommended improvements, including to the Emergency Department.

At the recent called meeting, Jim Sattler was the only trustee speaking in behalf of Mr. Spiegel, though a number of physicians at the meeting did so.
