3 CHI Memorial Nurses Receive Daisy Award For Extraordinary Nurses

  • Wednesday, October 21, 2020

Terri Thomas-Rawlins, RN, Randy Clark, RN, and Taylor Bowen, BSN, RN, all nurses at CHI Memorial, have received the Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

A coworker nominated Ms. Thomas-Rawlins for her enthusiasm and teamwork. “There could be a DAISY award given to Terri every day for the work determination that she brings to the table. She gives 110 percent all the time and is a positive influence to every person she encounters.  She has stayed after her shift ended to help stabilize and care for patients in distress.  Hospitals, nocturnists and intensivists are proud to work with such an amazing colleague, team leader, mentor and friend,” the coworker said.

Ms. Thomas-Rawlins is a nurse in the medical intensive care unit at CHI Memorial Hospital Chattanooga.  She has worked at CHI Memorial since 1988.

A former patient nominated Mr. Clark. “When I was 17, I had been rushed in due to having a 90 percent blockage in my celiac artery, which was causing me to have severe symptoms of overdosing (vomiting, in and out of consciousness). I had never touched a drug in my life, and Randy seemed to be the only one who knew there was an underlying cause to my issue. I can’t really remember a lot of that night due to my mental status, but I remember when I opened my eyes every time Randy was there doing all he could to keep me with him. He made sure to comfort and reassure my mother, grandmother and brother (who were in tears) that they weren’t going to lose me. I remember his joking manner with my younger brother that got him out of his tears.  All I can remember is thinking that God had literally sent an angel to my family. I wish I could remember a lot more details from that night, but one thing I do remember is Randy making sure everything was going the way it needed, having faith that all would turn out well and reassuring my family at a difficult time. It has been 10 years since that time, but one person that I will never forget is Randy, and that is why I believe he should get a DAISY,” the patient said.  Clark is a nurse in the emergency room at CHI Memorial Hospital Hixson. He has worked at CHI Memorial since 1990.

A coworker nominated Ms. Bowen for her dedication to her patients. “There was a patient with severe mental delays and learning disabilities. Taylor stayed in the room with this patient for over an hour feeding her breakfast by hand, laughing, joking and just making this patient smile. Taylor came out of the room, covered in sweat after [taking off] her PPE… She spoon fed this patient who hadn’t eaten much over the last two days. It was very heartwarming to see a nurse invest so much attention to detail,” the coworker said. Ms. Bowen is a nurse in the critical care unit at CHI Memorial Hospital Chattanooga.  She has worked at CHI Memorial since 2014.

Officials said, "CHI Memorial is pleased to partner with the DAISY Foundation to recognize the extraordinary difference nurses make in the lives of patients and coworkers. Nurses are chosen each month to receive this wonderful award that honors compassionate care.

"At a presentation attended by the nurse’s colleagues, physicians, patients, leaders and visitors, the honoree receives a certificate commending which reads, 'In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people.' The honoree is also given a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa, a daisy bouquet and a copy of her/his nomination letter. The honoree's nursing unit receives a cinnamon doughnut party because it takes a team for a nurse to achieve his/her best. Tasty Doughnuts generously donates the treats for this worthy cause."
