Two Super Late Model races took to dirt tracks Memorial Day as Tampa's East Bay Raceway Park kicked off three nights of action with the Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model series and near the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, 411 Motor Speedway hosted an Iron-man series SLM event.
Tampa drew 35 race teams from 17 states for the fourth $7,000 to-Win reboot of the season.
Normally, for almost 20 years consecutively, the Tampa races happen in February only. But this season, due to the COVID-19 pandemic circumstances, LODLM officials made a deal for a return (in May) for not only East Bay but also Golden Isles in South Georgia for a mini series reboot.
A pair of Georgians topped the starting field at EBRP and in the end, two peach state superstars would swap the lead multiple times. Blairsville's Jonathan Davenport (# 49) would overpower Zebulon's Shane Clanton (# 25) for his second series victory of the season late in the 40 lap affair. Series points leader Tim McCreadie of New York would finish third with Tennesseean Jimmy Owens 4th and Texan Tyler Erb 5th.
Meanwhile in Tennessee, 41 race teams entered the 8th annual Scott Sexton Memorial outside Gatlinburg east of Knoxville Monday evening. Tennessee standout Cory Hedgecock (# 23) and Alabama's Jason Heitt lead the field to green for the $10,052 to-Win event. Hedgecock whom just ran second a week earlier at 411, lead the race the entire way despite the efforts of West Virginia's Colten Burdette whom started 5th overall. Heitt would finish third with Indiana's Scott James and Virginia's Kyle Hardy rounding out the Top Five.
Lucas Oil Racing TV is where race fans can watch live the LODLM series races online with a subscription to the website, as fans are still not allowed in the grandstands in Florida. Races begin Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Rebroadcast of the races will re-air later this year on network televisions MavTV.
