Chattanoogan Madison Hayes Named To SEC All-Freshman Team

  • Tuesday, March 2, 2021
After becoming a regular in the starting lineup during the second half of the season, Mississippi State's Madison Hayes was tabbed to the SEC All-Freshman Team by league coaches on Tuesday.

The Chattanooga, Tennessee, native has started the last eight games for the Bulldogs and has consistently done a lot of the intangible things all season.
Hayes ranks second on the team in rebounding with 4.7 rebounds per game. She's finished four contests with at least eight boards. Of her total rebounds, 40 percent came on the offensive end of the floor.

Offensively, Hayes is averaging 4.6 points per game while shooting 43 percent from the field. In her best scoring performance of the season, she posted 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting and two 3-pointers to help lead State to a victory at Georgia, which is currently ranked No. 16 in the country. She's also recorded multiple assists in six games this year. On defense, Hayes recorded a season-high four steals in MSU's win over in-state rival Ole Miss, and she's notched four of her seven blocks in the last three games.

Hayes nearly finished with a double-double in her collegiate debut, recording eight points, nine rebounds and three assists against Jackson State. In her first career start, she posted nine points, four boards, one assist and one steal against Alabama. She tallied eight points, eight rebounds and a season-best four assists against Central Arkansas.

Hayes became the 14th SEC All-Freshman Team selection in program history. This marked the second year in a row that State had a newcomer on the team, as Rickea Jackson earned a spot on the list last season. Hayes joined the program as a five-star recruit and was the second McDonald's All-American signee for Mississippi State.
