For the third time this season, Evans, Ga. racer Brandon Overton has won at Tony Stewart's Eldora Speedway in Northwest Ohio. Thursday the best dirt track Super Late Model racers invaded the most famous 1/2 mile oval for the 51st running of the World 100, the most prestigious event of the season, just a few weeks since June's Double Dream 100 events were contested.
Overton, one of the hottest racers in America, took the checkers after a torrid battle with fellow Georgian Dale McDowell and early race leader Ricky Thornton of New Mexico. McDowell took the lead mid-race but a three Georgia car race (with Jonathan Davenport) saw Overton regain the lead for good with about 25 laps remaining.
Overton pockets an additional $54,000 for the Wells Motorsports team to go along with the nearly quarter of a million from back in June.
McDowell was passed late in the race Thursday by New York's Tim McCreadie who'd finish second after charging from 19th. Behind McDowell was Hudson O'Neil of Indiana driving for Double Down Motorsports of Maryville. Davenport was fifth, Thornton wound up eighth, Tennessean Jimmy Owens was eleventh, NASCAR's Kyle Larson was thirteenth with Georgian Ashton Winger in sixteenth and Tennessean Scott Bloomquist seventeenth overall.
Friday and Saturday the 50th running of the World 100 takes place, after last year's event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Live coverage of the event is available online at Floracing.com for subscribers, beginning at 7 p.m.
